Daniel O’Donnell ‘Heartbroken’ After Sudden Death of His Beloved Sister Kathleen
The Irish music world is in mourning as country star Daniel O’Donnell faces one of the most devastating losses of his life — the sudden death of his sister, Kathleen Doogan (née O’Donnell). The news has left Daniel, his family, and the entire Donegal community in shock, as Kathleen had not been ill and passed away unexpectedly at her home in Kincasslagh.
Kathleen is survived by her loving husband John, their sons John Francis and Daniel, and their daughters Tricia and Fiona. She is also deeply mourned by her siblings — Margo, Jamesie, Daniel, and John Bosco O’Donnell — all of whom were extremely close to her. Friends say Daniel and Kathleen shared a particularly strong bond, both close in age and in spirit.
“Daniel is heartbroken,” a family friend shared. “He and Kathleen were very close. She passed suddenly, without warning. She hadn’t been sick. The whole family is devastated.”
Kathleen was widely known and respected in the local community. Alongside her husband John, she ran the Viking House Hotel in Kincasslagh, a warm and welcoming landmark that had been purchased years earlier by her entertainer brother. Many remember Kathleen for her kindness, her gentle manner, and the way she always made guests and locals feel at home.
Her sudden passing has sent waves of sorrow through Donegal, a place where the O’Donnell family name is woven into the cultural and musical fabric of the county. Fans of Daniel and his sister Margo, both beloved Irish performers, have been sending condolences and prayers from across Ireland and around the world.
Kathleen’s remains will repose at her home in Kincasslagh from noon today, with Rosary at 9 p.m. for two nights.
Her Funeral Mass will take place on Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Kincasslagh, followed by burial in Belcruit Cemetery.
For Daniel, who has always placed immense value on family, this loss cuts deeply. Those close to him say he is leaning on faith, family, and the support of the community during this heartbreaking time.
Messages of sympathy continue to pour in:
-
“Thinking of you all during this terrible time.”
-
“So sorry for your loss, Daniel — may Kathleen rest in peace.”
-
“Sending prayers to the entire O’Donnell family.”
Kathleen Doogan will be remembered for her warmth, her strength, and the love she poured into her family and her community.
May she rest in peace.
